Wildlife at The Suffolk Escape

We’ve always been aware of, and so grateful for, the array of wildlife on our farm. Some of it can be seen and heard directly from the log cabins or Sheepyard Barn, which feels a such a treat and a real honour.

Sitting quietly on the deck at the lodges with a cup of tea or relaxing in the outdoor lounge at the barn, you’re likely to be lucky enough to have your own sights and sounds wildlife show! Even better, you don’t have to wander far from the log cabins or Sheepyard Barn to spot even more.

We were delighted to have a wildlife photographer and RSPB volunteer stay with us recently who very kindly shared his knowledge, experience and photographs of what he saw around The Suffolk Escape. We hope this information will help those staying with us in the future to know what to look out for and help with identification of any sightings.

We were particularly excited because it is only early spring so we can expect to see more birds coming through on migration over the coming weeks. Examples of birds to look out for are:

Swallow
House Martin
Swift
Yellow Wagtail
Cuckoo
Ring Ouzel
Wheatear

It’s not just birds that you may see when staying here. Not only are there often herds of deer roaming the fields around the lodges and barn, but our guests were also treated to three pipistrelle bats hunting over the lake at dusk while they enjoyed a soak in the hot tub!

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, our location is a great base to access some of the dedicated wildlife reserves in Suffolk. Our wildlife photographer guest has kindly shared some nearby places to visit that are rich with wildlife:

RSPB Minsmere

SWT Languard Point

SWT Trimley Marshes

NNR Walberswick & Blyth Estuary

SWT Lackford Lakes

We’d love to hear about the different wildlife you see or hear while staying with us so please do drop us a line.
