Building a More Sustainable Log Cabin Holiday
Offering a luxury self catering holiday that is sustainable as we can make it is extremely important to us and central in how we run our small, independent business. It’s ever-growing and we are proud of our commitment in doing what we can to reduce our environmental impact and running our log cabins and Sheepyard Barn as sustainably as possible.
We’re excited to share that we have recently installed some solar PV panels to the log cabins to generate natural renewable energy and help further reduce our carbon footprint.
The panels combine to supply up to 20kWh of electricity which, during the brighter months of the year, means we will be self-sufficient in electricity. To further enhance this and give us electric on cloudy days and when the sun has gone down, we have included a battery storage facility too. This enables us to store the excess of electric that we don’t require during the day and use it at other times when the solar PV panels are not generating any power.
In the first month, it looks as if 90% of our electric has been self-generated! Plus we’ve also supplied a large amount of truly green excess electric back onto the national grid for others to use.
The adult-only log cabins, all built with timber from sustainable forests and have their own private hot tub, are set around a tranquil lake that is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Along with having their own water supply from a bore hole, our own sewage treatment plant and using logs from our farm for the wood stoves and summer chimineas, we are pleased with the addition of the solar panels and will continue to look for more ways to improve and protect our environment.
